Traces of quiet burning-away. The unique paintings created by burning and scraping away Hanji, remain both serene and intense. The palm-sized piece in the first photo of the feed, which was also my favorite, revealed an explicitly unfamiliar expression of Hanji, an entirely new planar surface that had emerged through repetitive deconstruction and reconstruction. It presented a novel scene that resembled both water bubbles and contour lines. Casper Kang's studio was a space that embodied such experiments and traces.
Seeing his work in person for the first time in a while, I realized once again how integral the elements of light and fire are to the artist's practice. The warped threads of the Hanji bathed in natural light brought their subtle textures to life, while the unevenly scorched burn marks created a pronounced contrast. When viewed from a distance, the boundaries of the layered Hanji blurred faintly, leaving a unique, lingering glow. Amidst the torn voids, the burnt traces, and the marks of accumulation followed by deconstruction, the layers of Hanji appeared infinitely mysterious. Despite using traditional materials, the traditional nature was intentionally filtered out; instead, through acts of repetition and submersion, a new type of material language was being created. In particular, recent works stood out for their method of layering Hanji over existing pieces to add a sense of temporality. The overlapping of layers as the overlapping of time. That relationship was indelibly present. An installation piece which revealed the artist’s unique perspective, displayed blue nylon threads and fragmented Hanji remnants generated during the Hanji-making process. I became curious about how these works would evolve over time.
Memories from three years ago converged on my impressions. Back when I was working as a gallerist, I recalled a later afternoon in early summer working alongside Jisu, setting up an installation work by crumpling, uncrumpling, and layering Hanji while preparing for Kang's solo exhibition. The endless repetition and labor were quite difficult, but as time passed, it remains as a particularly significant memory. Encountering the artist's work three years later, I realized the vitality in the greater impression of the artist’s process, even more so than the resulting work itself. This is why the artist's works have become special to me, even though I do not yet own one. It was wonderful to meet and catch up with the artist again during his open studio. And these were my impressions regarding his works, created through the visibility of time.
